Rezoning Application Withdrawn for Proposed Asphalt Plant in Lafayette County

Developer withdraws request; no action scheduled at upcoming Board meeting

Lafayette County has received official notice from the owner JWM Development, LLC (McCurdy)  that it is withdrawing its application to rezone a forty-acre tract of land on Highway 328 from A-1 (Agricultural) to I-2 (Industrial). As a result, the matter will not appear on the agenda for the Board of Supervisors’ next meeting on Monday, November 3, and no vote on the rezoning will take place. Any further requests to rezone the property will require a re-application and additional public hearings.

The withdrawal follows the October 20 public hearing on the rezoning request held before the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors. During the well-attended five hour hearing, the Board heard from all interested parties on both sides of the proposed rezoning and the need for additional industrial-type uses, including the proposed asphalt plant. Since the hearing was concluded, JWM Development communicated its willingness to instead locate the  asphalt plant to available space within the Lafayette County Industrial Park, which is zoned I-2, and withdraw its rezoning application.

The Board of Supervisors, the Oxford-Lafayette County Economic Development Foundation, which manages the Industrial Park, and JWM Development have not reached an agreement on the terms, conditions, and location of the asphalt plant within the Industrial Park. That is for future discussion and decision by the Board, JWM Development, and the Foundation.

Supervisor Greg Bynum shared, “We appreciate McCurdy’s willingness to consider the concerns and interests of the community in this matter. Our Board is committed to thoughtful growth and supporting progress while considering the character that residents value.”

The Board appreciates the many residents who shared perspectives throughout the process and remains committed to working collaboratively with residents and businesses as the county continues to grow.
